on to the next phase

So many changes, so many considerations. I’m in a totally new house, new space, and new studio. It’s not quite comfortable yet…but i’m stretching.

I’ve written about 10 songs in the last couple weeks. Unfortunately most of them are unlistenable. Either they’re too sappy, too dark, or just plain lame. Example: how many times do i need to use a word like ‘blood’ in a song – and how fucking cliché is that?

But I’m in a unique moment in life and it seems important to just allow myself to go where my instincts take me. Sometimes it’s ok to spend an inordinate amount of time on bad ideas. And then the theme of the record starts to jut out, because the songs develop themselves into that theme: spending time on the bad ideas. And then i have to be careful to not get too lost in the songs…the spinning, the swimming.

As I mine the bad ideas the good ones begin to emerge – and now I’m excited.

Berbati’s tonight
