Cherry City Wrap-Up

Over the weekend Bombs Into You played Salem’s Cherry City Music Festival. If Friday night was any indication, I would guess that the organizers were disappointed by the turnout. The shows we checked out were not well attended.. even the Thermals couldn’t fill the room. Organization and promotion seemed to be in place, so I’m not sure what went wrong.. perhaps Portland festivals like PDX Pop Now! and MusicfestNW are sufficiently close that Salemites don’t feel the need to attend a festival in their home town. Or maybe they just aren’t all that into live music. Or maybe the organizers thought they would get a bigger draw from college towns to the south and city-folk from the north. I just don’t know.
I do know that I enjoyed sets from a couple bands I hadn’t seen before. Portland up-and-comers Explode Into Colors were great and power-pop purveyors Speaker Speaker drove all the way from Seattle to play a rocking set to a nearly empty room.
